Hi, my name is Karen, but you can call me DJ HelloKaren! I’m a 40-year-old mother of 4 and Gigi to one. I spent my earlier years as a stay-at-home Mom and loved every minute of it. At the tender age of 37, I was thinking about my life and my story. I have made my share of mistakes, and I didn’t want that to be it. I didn’t want it to end there. I wanted them to be able to give my testimony, leaving nothing out, and it to have a happy ending. What could I do to make that happen? I had considered college in the past but never thought I had what it takes, but this time was different. I had a spark in me and went with it. I enrolled in some psychology classes with the goal of becoming a substance abuse counselor. One evening during Christmas break, at the end of my very first semester, I was having a conversation with one of my daughter’s friends, who also happened to be a fellow student. We were talking about dream jobs. When it was my turn to speak, I said my dream job is to be a DJ on the radio! I wanted to do that since I was at least 12. Suddenly that student replies, ” You know there’s a radio station on campus don’t you?”. “Shut the front door!” I immediately responded. I had no idea there was a radio station at the college! I immediately went online to drop the history class I was enrolled in for the upcoming semester and enrolled in the radio class offered in the Digital Media Program at Gulf Coast State College. I began co-hosting a 2-hour radio show and then went on to host two additional shows on the student-run radio station, WKGC 90.7 HD3 The AlterNation, before landing a spot as host of the midday show, The Mix, on the main station, WKGC 90.7 FM and HD. I have no idea what the future holds, but what I do know is the future is bright. My advice to you is: In the words of Chris Griffin from Family Guy, “Find a job you LOVE, and you will NEVER work a day of your life.”

“I adore the variety of shows on The AlterNation! Depending on when you tune in, the DJ could be playing 70’s rock, and the next DJ will play 90’s pop. They have a great music library.”

I love catching a glimpse of the DJs working in the cafeteria between classes. It makes me want to try my hand at being a radio DJ!
